Health and Safety Policy for Gardeners Goodmayes
Gardeners Goodmayes is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a way that protects the health, safety and wellbeing of our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public. We aim to deliver safe, tidy and professional gardening work in all outdoor spaces where we operate.
Our Health and Safety Commitment
The management of Gardeners Goodmayes accepts overall responsibility for health and safety performance. We will provide and maintain safe working conditions, equipment and systems of work, and we will ensure that our activities are properly managed to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property or the environment.
We will regularly review this policy to make sure it remains effective, relevant and appropriate for the type of gardening services we provide.
Health and Safety Objectives
Our main objectives are to:
Prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health in all gardening operations.
Identify hazards in gardens, yards and outdoor areas and control the associated risks.
Provide clear information, instruction, training and supervision to all staff.
Ensure that all gardening tools, machinery and vehicles are safe, maintained and used correctly.
Protect clients, visitors, neighbours and the general public from risks arising from our work.
Promote a positive health and safety culture throughout Gardeners Goodmayes.
Responsibilities
Management is responsible for putting this policy into practice, planning safe systems of work and ensuring that adequate resources are made available. This includes arranging risk assessments, staff training, equipment maintenance and monitoring of health and safety performance.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for day to day implementation of safe working practices on site. They must ensure that staff follow agreed procedures and that any hazards or incidents are reported and dealt with promptly.
All employees have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Staff must follow safety instructions, use protective equipment as required, and report hazards, near misses and accidents immediately.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before starting gardening work at any property, a suitable and sufficient risk assessment will be carried out to identify hazards and assess the level of risk. Typical issues considered include uneven ground, trip hazards, tools and machinery, manual handling, noise, weather conditions, access and egress, and interaction with the public.
On the basis of these assessments, we will implement appropriate control measures. These may include use of personal protective equipment, barriers or warning signs, safe systems for using machinery, restrictions on working at height, and procedures for lone working where applicable.
Risk assessments will be reviewed periodically and whenever there is a significant change in work activities, equipment or locations.
Training, Information and Supervision
Gardeners Goodmayes will provide relevant health and safety training for all employees, including induction training for new starters and refresher training when required. Training may cover topics such as safe use of gardening machinery, manual handling techniques, use of personal protective equipment, safe use of chemicals, and emergency procedures.
Information on site specific risks and control measures will be communicated to staff before work begins. Levels of supervision will be appropriate to the experience and competence of each employee and to the nature of the work being carried out.
Gardening Tools, Machinery and Vehicles
All gardening tools, powered machinery and vehicles used by Gardeners Goodmayes will be selected, inspected and maintained to ensure they are safe and fit for purpose. Equipment will only be used by employees who have been trained and authorised to use it.
Pre use checks will be carried out where appropriate and any defects or damage must be reported immediately. Faulty equipment will be taken out of service until it has been repaired or replaced.
Safe systems of work will be followed when operating lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, strimmers, leaf blowers and other powered tools, with particular attention to guarding, starting procedures, refuelling, noise, vibration and flying debris.
Chemicals, Substances and Environmental Protection
Where weed killers, fertilisers or other horticultural products are used, Gardeners Goodmayes will ensure that all substances are stored, handled, used and disposed of safely and in accordance with manufacturer instructions and relevant guidance.
We will aim to minimise use of hazardous substances and will consider safer alternatives where possible. Staff who apply chemicals will receive appropriate training and will use the required personal protective equipment.
Care will be taken to avoid harm to pets, wildlife, planting, soil and water courses. Areas treated with chemicals will be clearly identified and access restricted when necessary.
Personal Protective Equipment
Personal protective equipment such as safety footwear, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, high visibility clothing and respiratory protection will be provided where risk assessments indicate that it is necessary.
Employees must use the equipment provided, look after it properly and report any loss or damage so that replacements can be arranged. Personal protective equipment is regarded as a last line of defence and does not replace the need for safe working procedures.
Welfare, First Aid and Emergency Procedures
Reasonable welfare arrangements will be made for staff working on gardening sites, including access to drinking water, rest breaks and, where practicable, sanitary facilities.
Suitable first aid equipment will be available and employees will be made aware of the arrangements for first aid and emergency response. All staff must know how to obtain urgent medical assistance and how to respond in the event of serious incidents, including fire, major injury or sudden illness.
Incident Reporting and Continuous Improvement
All accidents, injuries, near misses and hazardous conditions must be reported to management as soon as possible. These events will be recorded and investigated so that underlying causes are identified and corrective actions can be implemented.
Gardeners Goodmayes is committed to continuous improvement of health and safety standards. We will monitor performance, learn from incidents and feedback, and review this policy regularly to ensure it supports safe, reliable and professional gardening services throughout our service area.
